‘Your Choice on the Road’: Sandwell Road Safety Evaluation Website

A major element of the work taking place to reduce road collisions and casualties in Sandwell has been delivering the ‘Your Choice on the Road’ presentation to as many young people as possible, including young offenders and pupil referral units

Officers in Sandwell were keen to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation, (developed by Road Casualty Reduction Officer Paul Guyver) at changing young people’s attitudes to driving.

In order to achieve this, a live website was developed. This allowed officers to ask a series of questions of the young people prior to and just after the presentation. The responses then automatically generate a series of graphs and statistics that assist in an overall evaluation of its effectiveness. It further allows staff and students to submit comments or suggestions.

Within the first two weeks of the site going live it received more than 1,000 visits. One of the first pre presentation comments received was enough to make us realise the need to change young people’s attitudes towards road safety

Comments prior to the presentation

Hello!! Well... people will drive even if they are under age anyway so what’s the point in trying to stop them?... I would get in someone’s car even if they were underage because at the end of the day you only live once, if you crash, you crash, if you don’t, you don’t... and that’s all there is to it... if it happens, it happens..... bye, bye... nice chatting to you... clair xoxox

And after………………..

I believe that hearing that presentation really touched me in a way that I never thought that it would, I really advise people to rethink their actions as it shows lives destroyed. The story of the young mans life destroyed after he was run over makes me think twice about wearing a seatbelt and also makes me appreciate my life ... Deeply touched, hope more young people wise up for the better.
