Birmingham South has a diverse population of just over 200,000.

The demographics of this area range from the heavily populated urban inner city areas with large elements of industry and commercial use, to the varied predominantly residential areas reaching out to the southern extremes of the West Midlands border.

Primary Targeted Performance Indicators

  • Reduce Accidental Fires in Dwellings
  • Reduce Anti-Social Arson – Rubbish Fires
  • Reduce Malicious False Alarm Calls
  • Reduce False Alarm Calls to Automatic Fire Alarms

Prevention Based Activity Initiatives:

  • ‘Accidental Fires in Dwellings’ are always of primary importance to us because of the impact on life and property in our communities, Home Fire Safety Checks will be our main focus in making our communities safer from the risk of fire.
  • ‘Anti Social Arson’ involving refuse and grass fires are a continual nuisance to our area as we move into the summer period. We are tackling this through close partnership with the Environmental Crime Unit, identifying and removing refuse before it can be burnt. We are pleased to announce the introduction of our Arson Cycle Team which will be concentrating on preventing fires in our Country Park and Woodland areas. This initiative is a first for West Midlands so we are hoping for huge success with this team.
  • Malicious False Alarms and false calls to Automatic Fire Alarms are a huge drain on our resources. We are tackling malicious calls by tracing mobile numbers that are consistent offenders. Responses to Automatic Fire Alarms are being dealt with by our Business Liaison Officers working closely with businesses that are significant offenders.
