Legislative Fire Safety

The West Midlands Fire Service is committed to enforcing the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which came into force in October 2006. This has repealed most of the previous pieces of Fire Safety Legislation.

The Fire Safety Order places a duty on the owner, employer or responsible person to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment at their respective places of work, advice and guidance can be found on the Communities and Local Government website just click on Fire and Resilience.

In order to carry out our responsibilities under the act the Brigade area is administered under three Fire Safety Delivery Areas as follows:

We conform to the principles of better regulation and the enforcement concordat. In all cases our overarching concern is for the safety of people and where possible we will provide education and information to encourage self-compliance in those that are responsible for that safety. Our actions will in all cases be proportionate to the risk we see to achieve our objective of public safety.

In severe cases of non-compliance with fire safety requirements or where the law is flouted, we will take strong and decisive action to protect people from unscrupulous businesses and individuals that present a risk to the members of our community.
